In the OSIRIS concept, the goal is to establish a dedicated circuit (lightpath) per video file to be transferred, allowing moving the content as fast as possible (i.e., faster than real-time) from one location to another one. As the data is transferred faster than real-time, it will also be possible to temporary pre-empt connections in order to free resources that are needed more urgently by other requests. For this purpose, tightly integrating the VoD middleware (responsible for delivering the VoD service and the communication between server and settopbox) and control of the optical network layer is required. The proposed OSIRIS concept looks promising thanks to following reasons. Video traffic will more and more dominate the network. First of all, video formats evolve and will evolve from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD) and beyond, requiring more and more data to be transported over the network. Secondly, video is consumed more and more on a on-demand basis, rendering the resource efficient multi-/broad-cast techniques less applicable. Establishing a dedicated transparent optical circuit for each video file – as in the OSIRIS concept – instead of identically handling in intermediate nodes huge amounts of rather small packets, becomes more and more interesting from a cost-efficiency and energy-efficient point of view, thanks to the increasing files sizes. Pushing the video content over such circuit as fast as possible, until the connection is temporary pre-empted by another request, also fits very well with the typical behaviour of video consumers that start watching a movie from the beginning without much interactivity in terms of fast-forward/rewind until they decide to switch to some other content. Présentation de la proposition: Two main outcomes are expected from the project. At one side, the goal is to elaborate an end-to-end architecture featuring optical flow switching as network technology and taking into account several aspects like gap in bitrates in core versus access networks, impact of the network edge (like VoD systems), protocol/software stack, need for caching popular content, interoperability with legacy and other service production platforms, etc. At the other side, an end-to-end signalling and related control protocols (that can be accommodated by for example the GMPLS framework) will be developed, These protocols should be able to coordinate switch actions inside the network, usage of the buffers in for example the metro nodes bridging access and core networks and the start/pause/resume of the download of the video files. In addition to both outcomes, the OSIRIS project also aims to experimentally validate and evaluate the proposed concept. A small-scale physical proof-of-concept demonstrator should allow validating in practice the OSIRIS concept and getting a better insight into possible issues when implementing the concept. A large-scale emulation platform will allow evaluating the performance of the control protocols to be developed within the project. The project intends to experimentally demonstrate that a significant reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions in communities, as well as an increase of renewable energy into the electric grid, can be achieved through the proposed system and methodology, which combines advanced ICT and cognitive approaches. Présentation de la proposition: The project has a focused approach, towards the development of a monitoring and information system. Nevertheless, at the same time, it aims for a more comprehensive application than today´s solutions. The proposed system is basically composed by the following components: 1) Technological platform able to integrate and support different sensing systems, both conventional and smart systems from various suppliers and technologies, for energy efficiency and emissions purposes in the context of residences/buildings, neighbourhoods and communities. Research on new applications for intelligent sensors will also be considered. As a consequence of the use of such platform, it is expected a better utilization and control of eventually installed local energy resources, as well as an increase of surplus local energy (mostly renewable) being supplied back to the grid. 2) Multiple information and communication systems, including digital TV broadcast, mobile phone and internet, with special contents and applications, to make people aware about their energy consumptions (and eventually generation) into their communities and capable of taking intelligent decisions towards energy efficiency and emission reduction. Please read more on the website Expertises demandées: Expertise in ICT systems: sensing networks, open SOA and communication technologies. - Expertise in energy efficiency and emission reduction: technologies and assessment methodologies. - Expertise in smart systems: smart metering and appliances. - Expertise in social networks: cooperative projects and cognitive approach to motivation and awareness. Partenaires recherchés: - R&D Centres and universities - researchers and developers of the technological platform for the integration of multiple/different sensing systems and communication technologies. - Industrial Partners - suppliers of traditional and/or smart metering systems and smart appliances, which will be used for study and characterization purposes, as well as application in a demonstrative case. This new age pyramid has enormous socio-economic implications. It demands a paradigm shift in health and social care where ICT will provide a basis for new inclusive products and services to reach the three main challenges to avoid the potential exclusion of a growing aging population from the social and economic fabric: Independent Living; Active Ageing at Work and Social Participation. AURE aims to contribute at the first challenge giving to people the opportunity of aging well maintaining their quality of life and personal independence in indoor activities through all their old age. Présentation de la proposition: The AURE consortium is persuaded that the best solution for assure the independent living to elderly people is an assistive environment built around the necessity of the user on the concept of the ubiquitous robotics. The AURE ubiquitous robotics environment is formed by several subsystems which are integrated in the things of everyday life (furniture, appliances..) and embedded into everyday environments (wall, floor, ceil..), so that they are invisible to the user or they appear only if necessary. Such smart artefacts are joined together to create distributed and self-regulating system that is adapted to the user needs. Each subsystem is simple, versatile, and autonomous to perform its set of tasks but collaborating with the other subsystems can perform complex and on demand scheduled tasks. These distributed subsystems will form a dynamic ecosystem that is able to grow and adapt to the evolving needs of the elderly but also of the other house inhabitants. The AURE vision is based on high modularity that is a strong point of the system, in fact, each module is “simple” and designed for specific set of tasks. The benefits of this structure are that the time-to-market and developing cost for each modules are reduced; safety and dependability design process are more efficient and effective; and, moreover, the user can buy only the modules that he/she needs, choosing and adding new modules following the evolution of his/her old age. The main objective of the project is to deliver a framework of this vision constraining the whole project to User-Centred Design Methodology, RAMSS methodology (Reliability + Availability + Maintainability + Safety + Security), Ethical Issues, Usability, Accessibility and Modules Styling. Outcomes of AURE will demonstrate, by full operational validation of the proposed system in real user scenario, the effective increase in independence and quality of life of elderly. User involvement is essential for the success of AURE in all the project phases, from the user requirements definition to the operational validation, with evident ethical issues that will be managed applying any pertinent national/international regulations (i.e. the Medical Device Directive, Protection of personal data, ISO 14971, etc.) and following the due common procedures as informed consent, medical or expert care assistant supervision to tests, accident insurance policy, etc. AURE aims to set the basis of a new product line and service in the area of assistive technologies for elderly.
