Segmentation in Robot Vision

Sujet:
This project aims at the development of adaptive image segmentation algorithms
for robot vision systems. The training input for adapting the segmentation
will
be generating using eye-tracking systems, so that the robot "learns to see"
directly from human behaviour. 
Présentation de la proposition:

Problem:
Computer (stereo-) vision is the main source of sensory input for flexible and
intelligent robots. The first processing step in computer vision is most often
the identification of those areas in the image that deserve further attention
(image segmentation). This image segmentation step is also the most inflexible
one and always requires application-specific tuning and programming by machine
vision experts to set up the robot for a specific task. This need for
tuning by
experts in turn removes most of the flexibility and advantages that robots
possess. 

Solution:
Within this project we address this problem by creating technologies that
enable the robot to learn to see from human gazing behavior. A subsequent
automatic optimization/selection/construction of image segmentation algorithms
by evolutionary computing will aim at creating algorithms that accurately
segment those areas of the image that were considered relevant by the human. 
After a short period of training an algorithm of sufficient accuracy will have
been constructed and the robot will able to operate autonomously.

We are looking for a research partner or company partner with research
experience in the field of robot vision.

Nom provisoire du projet: ClearPath-IB: Cross-Language (Euro-Asia)
Retrieval of
Patent Hits and Intelligent Business

Sujet:
ClearPath-IB tackles the issue of language evolution in the context of machine
translation for information retrieval across languages in a business
environment.
Over time, terms used, especially in a business or technological domain,
change
differently in different languages. As a result, the quality of machine
translation is adversely affected. ClearPath-IB will mine existing text to
learn and augment ontologies with this new dimension of time. 

Présentation de la proposition:
Initially, the languages to be covered will be English, French, German,
Russian, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese, but the techniques developed will be
language independent and will be applicable to a wide range of other languages
without further development. A demonstration system will be developed to allow
assessment and benchmarking in one or more of the following additional
languages: Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Dutch, Bulgarian or Malay.

The final results of this project include:
 a measurable improvement in the quality of machine translation tools, as
proven by cross-language information retrieval tasks 
 a methodology and tool for the creation of a time-aware ontology 
 a time-aware ontology 
 an application for cross-language patent retrieval 
 an application of the system in one other field of interest (of the newly
sought partner) 

Expertises demandées:
The new partner should be a large company with extensive experience in
business
intelligence or a related topic; one which has operations in several markets
and needs to search across languages. 

Partenaires recherchés:
Industrial end-user for analysis and testing.
A pharma or chemical company would be of particular interest.

This project will conduct research on an interdependent wireless network
without involvement of base stations. Each radio in this network
contributes to
information transfer while it talks to others. The network makes use of the
benefits of cognitive radios and smart routing to provide reliable service to
end users in city-wide areas. The scalability and throughput of the network
will be much higher than any traditional ad-hoc radio networks, although there
are also significant technical challenges in providing high-quality services.

communications in a city-wide area

* Research on network throughput, QOS, Privacy, and Security 
* Integrated RF/Baseband IC design
